The quick answer

There is no universal down-payment percentage for every commercial truck financing application. The required amount can depend on the applicant, business, vehicle, price and financing structure. Plan the down payment together with the cash the business needs after closing, and confirm the actual requirement in a written offer.

Work from the complete transaction

Start with the agreed vehicle price and identify taxes, fees, body equipment, repairs and delivery costs. Ask which items, if any, can be included in the proposed financing. The amount financed is not necessarily the advertised truck price minus a simple percentage.

If there is a trade-in, use its net value after any outstanding balance and agreed charges. Confirm the exact treatment on the final invoice and financing documents.

Protect the operating reserve

List the cash needed before the first customer payment: insurance deposits, registration, fuel, initial servicing and other start-up costs. Add a reserve for the risks specific to the truck and work.

Compare a larger down payment with the smaller reserve it leaves behind. Reducing the financed balance can lower some borrowing costs, but using all available cash can make an otherwise viable operation fragile.

Ask how the amount changes the offer

Request clear terms for the actual down payment you can support. If comparing alternatives, hold the truck, price and term constant so you can see what changes. Include all fees, payments and any final obligation.

Be cautious with assumptions based on an advertised minimum. A particular offer may depend on conditions that do not match your application. Zero-down availability should never be treated as a general promise.

Confirm the source and timing of funds

Ask when the down payment is due, who receives it and what evidence the provider needs. If funds are borrowed elsewhere, include the additional obligation in the affordability calculation and disclose it accurately.

Avoid transferring money based solely on an informal chat. Confirm the counterparty, complete transaction documents and payment instructions through an appropriate channel.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10% or 20% always required?

No single percentage applies to all providers and applications. Ask for the requirements for your actual business and vehicle.

Can a trade-in replace a cash down payment?

A provider may allow net trade-in value to contribute, but this depends on the transaction. Confirm the amount after any outstanding loan and how it is documented.

Does more down payment guarantee approval?

No. The provider still assesses the applicant, ability to repay, asset and other criteria. It can change a transaction without ensuring acceptance.
